The goal of our environmental work is to contribute to a more sustainable society. We aim to reduce our negative impact on the environment and we compensate for our carbon emissions by recovering the same amount of carbon dioxide.
IIS’s environmental work was initiated in autumn 2007, when the Board of Directors adopted the environmental policy jointly developed by our employees and an environmental group was formed. Since that time, a number of improvements have been implemented to reduce IIS negative impact on the environment, including the renegotiation of all agreements pertaining to such areas as cleaning, messenger deliveries and food. Garbage sorting was introduced, and all employees were offered yearly cards with Stockholm Public Transport as a salary benefit.
In 2009, the next stage of IIS’s environmental work was launched, which involved a climate analysis of the company’s operations in cooperation with the Natural Step and U&We and since then we do climate analysis every second year. The last one was made in 2012 and revealed for example that our environmental impact was reduced from 500 to 266 tons of carbon dioxide in two years. If you look at the carbon footprint per employee and per domain, the numbers have been reduced even further, by more than half. Our total energy use has fallen by 30 percent since 2010, mainly through the slave server operations have been reviewed and streamlined. We are pleased with the results of our actions, but we are striving to further reduce of our environmental impact.
Reduced printed matter
IIS has reduced the number of printed matter greatly, because our many printed Internet guides previously gave relatively large carbon footprint. All Internet guides are available since 2011 in online versions, and we encourage our readers to choose them instead of ordering a printed copy. For the same reason, we have since 2011 also chosen to publish our annual reports only in digital form. 2010 IIS internal registrar .SE Direkt, started a promotion where customers were offered to get their payment notice on email instead of by mail. For every person who said yes, SEK 2.50 were donated for the planting of new rainforest. In total it was nearly SEK 35 000 that where used to plant new trees in Uganda and Mexico. Since then all customers are offered to get the payment notice by email and in 2013 the number of customer accounts that had choosen payment notice by email instead of payment notice by paper had rised with 10 000. Since September 2011 .SE Direkt are also offering several years payment, anywhere from 2 – 10 years. This also helps to reduce the number of paper payment notices.
Efforts to reduce the environmental impact of servers
In 2012 we focused on reducing the environmental impact of our servers. A challenge we have is that our business is growing, both in a national and international context and thus increases our traveling. For example, representatives of. IIS’s school competition Webbstjärnan give lectures and hold trainings around the country. We have other employees who travel to participate in standardization work and exchange of experiences with colleagues from around the world. To prevent the ecological footprints to become too large, we constantly strive to find balance in our energy consumption in relation to what we want to accomplish with the business.
Donation to the World Wild Life Fund
Instead of sending tradional Christmans card, IIS wishes all a Merry Christmas with a donation to the World Wild Life Fund´s tree planting project.
Climate compensation for IIS environmental impact
After. SE’s latest climate analysis in 2012 we did a climate compensation during 2013 for our emissions from operations. The compensation was localized to the Plan Vivo project Trees of Hope in Malawi and was done in cooperation with small farmers who plant trees in small-scale agriculture.
