100,000 measurements with the Bredbandskollen for iPhone
2009-03-16
Since the beginning of December 2008, Swedish iPhone users have been able to test the speed of their mobile broadband connection directly in their phones. Every sixth measurement is executed from another supplier than Telia, and mobile broadband is now measured on unpopulated island in the Baltic Sea.
Apart from measuring their speed, the service Bredbandskollen (Swedish for Broadband check) also anonymously displays other iPhone measurements in the vicinity. This way, the user gets a better chance to find a location with good coverage and high speed.
Most popular program in Appstore
After the launch, Bredbandskollen for iPhone quickly became the most downloaded iPhone application in Sweden and the programme was at the top of the list for several weeks. In total, the programme today is installed on 22,000 telephones.
- It’s terrific that it’s gone this well, since the start three months ago over 100,000 measurements have been executed. This is a good result considering that the service is only available for one model of telephones, which furthermore is relatively new, says Rickard Dahlstrand, project manager for the Bredbandskollen service at .SE (The Internet Infrastructure Foundation).
One interesting detail in this context is that only 85 per cent of the measurements were done from phones that used Telia as supplier, although Telia, so far, is the only official iPhone supplier in Sweden. The percentages for other suppliers were 4.6 per cent for Tre, 3.8 per cent for Tele2 and 3.7 per cent for Telenor. Thus, thousands of users are calling through other suppliers than Telia.
Measurement from a desert island
The average speed for all the measurements within Sweden is at 1.25 Mbit/s. In general, most measurements are done in the major city regions of Sweden, but there are measurements from more or less all over the world, for example Phuket and Cape Town. One of the oddest tests was executed on Gotska Sandön, a completely uninhabited island (especially in wintertime) in the middle of the Baltic Sea. The speed there was 0.05 Mbit/s. Among the service’s users, 80 per cent stated that they were indoors, 13 per cent inside a car and only 7 per cent outdoors. The percentage for outdoor users is bound to rise as the weather warms up
